Gillian’s Pizza was at the Gluten-Free Expo in New Jersey, and I must say that their French Bread Pizza was the best food I sampled at the event. It was prepared in what looked like a commercial toaster (conveyor belt type, I think), so I am guessing that a toaster oven would be ideal to replicate the wonderful taste and crispy yet chewy texture. We will be buying this!

The gluten free beer that was poured at the Gluten Free Expo alone made it worth the trip. That’s not to say that there wasn’t a lot of great food and friendly people… there were. But the beer tasting was just so much fun!

Here were our favorites, in alphabetical order:

Bard’s is one of the originals… true gluten-free pioneers that made my transition to a gluten free diet so much more enjoyable.

We visited the British Beer Company in Hyannis, MA on Cape Cod while we awaited our ferry over to Nantucket… it was located just a short ride from the Steamship Authority. Perfect.

Little Shanty in Warren, NJ is a revelation as to how phenomenal a gluten-free restaurant can be. Or, maybe the owners just know how to operate a restaurant so well that they make it look easy. The service was excellent. Jon, the proprietor, came out and introduced himself to us, and I noted that he also did this with every other customer in the store.

Heartland Brewery - Midtown West

Heartland Brewery has six locations operating (South Street Seaport got walloped by Hurricane Sandy), yet only the "Midtown West" location (625 8th Avenue at 41st street) has a gluten free menu. I guess we can file that under "beggars can't be choosers," which is a refrain all-too-familiar to Celiacs.

Before you get too upset, do know that they brew their own Gluten Free beer on Tap.
