San Gerardo de Dota is one of the premier birding locations in Costa Rica is San Gerardo de Dota near the peak of Cerro de La Muerte, the 2nd highest peak in Costa Rica. It is a small valley where the Rio Savegre starts. There are many fine resort hotels, catch-your-dinner trout restaurants and exquisite trails where the Resplendent Quetzal can be seen.

Costa Rica has ideal micro-climates for about a dozen varieties of avocados. It all depends on the elevation you plant the trees. Usually, any particular elevation can support 2 or 3 different avocado varieties. Above 1200 meters, for instance, Hass avocados do very well. Only plant grafted seedlings as they will adapt best and give the most fruit.

Costa Rica has very strict, detailed labor laws by which you must abide if you hire anyone on a regular basis. Not following the law could land you a fine or a costly lawsuit from the employee. It is always best, for regular workers, for both of you to sign a contract so that there is not misunderstanding later.

Just as in the U.S., you can dial 911 for an emergency in Costa Rica. Ask for an English speaking operator if you do not speak Spanish. If you need an ambulance call 128 and to report a fire 118. To call the traffic police, the number is 2222-9330 (yes, Costa Rica uses 8-digit phone numbers). Dial 113 for directory assistance.
