Gluten Free on a Budget

With a 50% Celiac household, we've become a 100% gluten free family at home for many reasons -- we have a tiny, galley kitchen with no room for an extra toaster and extra pans, no room to safely prepare gluten and gluten free meals at the same time and a need to simplify our life, being 100% gluten free was the right choice for us. But, that decision has come at a high cost -- my family-of-four's grocery expenses sometimes reach well over $1,700 a month. With two kids under 6, that barely seems possible. But, it's true.

So, I've decided that we're going to cut our grocery bill in half over the next few months. We're starting with a goal of spending $250 a week. To a non gluten free family, I'm sure that sounds so easy. But, for an "I enjoy cooking when I have time...on the weekend" kind of person, it'll be a challenge. I encourage (no, beg) others to post tips for saving money on a gluten free diet. I need all of the help that I can get. And, I know that my family is not alone in our endeavor to save money on the gluten free diet.
